Murray’s Last Match
In the end, it was understated. But tennis star Andy Murray’s illustrious career – undoubtedly he’s one of the greatest sporting stars Britain has ever produced – came to an end as he and Dan Evans were defeated in the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles. It was a career that towards the end featured a series of painful injuries and operations, but nevertheless, the Scotsman’s nearly-twenty year career was a memorable one.
Biles Makes History
Simone Biles took home her sixth Olympic gold medal, and her second of Paris 2024 – making her the third woman in history to have won gold more than once in gymnastics – when she won the all-around on Thursday. It was her 39th career medal – a record.
Team GB’s First Medal
Team GB took home their first gold medal on Monday, as Laura Collett, Tom McEwen, and Ros Canter retained their Olympic team eventing title in showjumping at the Chateau de Versailles, finishing 12.3 points clear of second-placed France. Giddy up.
The Coolest Man Alive?
Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec went viral for his nonchalant, nonplussed expression and outfit as he won silver at the 10m air pistol mixed team event. Whilst his competitors went for hi-tech eyewear and futuristic protective gear, the 51-year-old opted for a baggy t-shirt and demure glasses. Very chic.
Yee Triumphs After Postponement
Brit Alex Yee took home the gold in the men’s triathlon on Wednesday, after a nail-biting, sensational sprint finish, finishing six second ahead of his rival Hayden Wilde. The event was originally due to take place on Tuesday, but due to poor water quality in the River Seine, was postponed. Sacrebleu.
Nervy Moments For Brown
Sky Brown, the 16-year-old British skateboarder, suffered a dislocated shoulder – the day before she arrived at the Olympics. She was however cleared to compete on Thursday, meaning she’ll be able to improve on her Tokyo bronze medal on the 6th of August, in the women’s park skateboarding competition.
The Floating Surfer
An incredible image of the Gabriel Medina celebrating surfaced, taken by Jérôme Brouillet. The Brazilian surfer appears to float in the air in a strange moment of serenity. In actual fact, he’d just come out of a massive wave, which scored him a 9.9 – the highest so far of the Olympics. The heats were then postponed due to adverse weather conditions in Tahiti.
A Strange Opening Ceremony
Millions tuned in to watch the opening ceremony of Paris 2024, and were greeted with a surreal, camp exploration of French culture, featuring drag queens, ménages à trois, Seine processions, and Lady Gaga. What a treat.
