I remember my first race.
I can only liken my marathon pre-game to the iconically memeable schedule of Lady Gaga – but instead of “club” she’s saying: “No sleep. Run, run, another run, hydrate, legs hurt, no sleep”.
I can’t say I achieved Lady Gaga level of success, but the feeling of personal fulfilment when finishing the Marathon remains unmatched in my eyes, despite the difficult build up to the race.
Saying that, if I knew then what I know now, my whole marathon experience could have run a lot smoother. So here are my pre-, post- and on-the-run essentials.
An Unbeatable Playlist
We can’t account for different music tastes here, but you’re going to want a carefully curated playlist. Piece of advice: Break the race down in stages and match your music to the desired energy – think about where you’re going to need that extra push. For your listening needs, the Powerbeats Pro are a good option for movement, as there’s nothing quite like losing an ear bud mid-run – that’s time poorly spent. If you would rather go without, but want to stay focused, then the Experience Plus Loop Earplugs should do the trick.
Run Tracking
Knowing your goals heading into the race is an important factor in choosing the right tracking device. As an all around reliable piece of kit, the Garmin Forerunner 55 is a really solid contender. Plus, use the Runna App for tailored plans to help you stick to your training routine pre-race.
Energy, Hydration & Fluid Maintenance
Maurten Sport Gels – these will be your fuel to get you started and keep you going. Maurten even has a guide on how to use them to suit you and your race. Hux Hydration Tablets come in an array of flavours which both taste heavenly and keep you hydrated during those gruelling miles. Make sure to start the race well hydrated and well-fed 24 hours+ before.
The Right Footwear
For comfort an good energy return, try the Cloudmonsters. For speed, you might be better off looking towards the Cloudboom Echo 3.
Tried & Tested Socks
There’s nothing quite like a fresh pair of socks (or sheets). But when it comes to race day, you’re going to want to have worn whichever socks you choose before. My preference would be Salomon, who do some great running socks.
Chafe Sticks
Not sexy, but necessary. Give Body Glide or Life Jacket a go.
The Smooth & Light Shorts
My favourites are the Pruzan Curved Marathon Shorts, which have the perfect pockets for storing your gels – or a preferred style from the Soar Marathon Shorts section.
Support & Community
Training by yourself can be lonely. Luckily, London is buzzing with organised run clubs that are free of charge and offer a strong sense of community (plus you’ll have plenty of people to bounce your questions off of). Try Your Friendly Runners, PureSport Run Club or RunDem.
When you hit the start line, think about a mantra you’d like to repeat to yourself that will keep you motivated to finish and get you through the inevitable rough patches. What kept you going during those long runs and training hours? This is your moment.
Remember, support is such a game changer. Recruit your pals to cheer you on at the three-quarter-way point, and definitely ensure that there’s a proper post-race plan. This is the time to make a booking at that restaurant or pub you’ve been meaning to visit – because trust me, nothing will ever taste as good.
